Hello All,
Thanks for tuning in. Charlie needs a break, so Off the Telegraph is going on temporary hiatus. The bad news: we're going to have to suspend the 'Capture Cal Life' contest. (Psst: save your submissions for a later date.) The good news: we'll be back soon, so please keep checking in! Continue

UC Santa Cruz has taken over the tree sitting trend. It seems a little bit more campus appropriate to me. UCSC is the hippie school after all right? I imagine the students there are more supportive. It is nice to know the tree-sitters have found a nice new home, and this time fighting animal testing as well!… Continue

It is a holiday, no class. What is it Memorial Day? No that is in the spring. Is it Labor Day? No, that already happened...Oh yeah it is Veterans' Day. They pretty much are all the same right? Does that mean we are going to be thoughtfully thanking and remembering veterans all day tomorrow instead of class? Hells no! I mean you are all out partying right now aren't you? Pre-Veterans' Day boozing is what it is all about. It is almost as cool as post Obama win boozing. I mean how many of you went… Continue

This is a comic from Toothpaste For Dinner.
1. Berkeley has real influence on our soon to be president. President-elect Barak Obama held his first press conference on Friday with two UC Berkeley professors standing behind him. Obama's 17 person Transition Economic Advisory Board includes Professor Laura Tyson from Haas School of Business
Here are three things you might not want to miss this weekend, one for each day.
1. I said it last month but seriously, check out the Oakland Art Murmer if you haven't been I urge you. If you have been I remind you. It is tonight, so get your butt to Oakland and drink on the street, see cool art, and go to hip parties. Here is the info.
2. Change the Beat II, at Blake's on Telegraph on Saturday. Go hear some cool bands and help Ugandan Refugees. I… Continue

Off the Telegraph is having a contest to see which of our members can best capture life at UC Berkeley. So get out those cameras and video cameras and see if you can capture Berkeley life. Try to have a sense of humor in your submissions. The idea is to capture something that Berkeley students can really relate to. Here are the rules of the game:
1) To submit you must be a student o… Continue

1. Casually walk up and say " Hey, are you in my medical anthropology class?". This one is good because it makes you sound smart and sophisticated and also starts a conversation, " What is Medical anthropology?". Then you can take two routes, you can jokingly go, "I have no idea, I just wanted to talk to you", or you can memorize the Wikipedia page.
2. "Hey! how are you, I haven't seen you forever!"; wait until he/she answers in a… Continue

Here is a video of the action from Tuesday night in case you missed it, I just wanted to rub in your face all the fun that was had on the street. Funny, Berkeley students get involved after the win, but aren't willing to put any of the fight in that Berkeley students in the sixties did. I think it is kind of a cop out, but I guess we were celebrating our Berkeley heritage.
Also:
If you are outraged about the passing of propositions 8 ( and I know many Berkeley students are)… Continue

Need a new ipod? Apparently the ASUC (Associated Students of the University of California) is giving them away to lucky winners. The only information I have is that you should stop by their table in Upper Sproul, outside the north bookstore entrance and check out their programs f… Continue

Hello bearlings, I bring you a new weekly feature called " Ask Charlie". You can ask me advice about anything just send your questions to offthetelegraph@gmail.com. Here is this weeks question:
Dear Charlie,
I have a friend in one of my classes who barely bothers to show up. He asks me for my notes, which I take the time to type up neatly, basically every other class. He does the reading and uses my well organized notes and seems do be doing just as well as I am in the class. If I didn't show… Continue

People have hit the streets of our famously liberal town to celebrate Obama's victory this evening. I guess politics is the only thing that can wake the quiet town of Berkeley on a weeknight. Tons of people gathered ( and are still there) on Shattuck, mostly students. I received a phone call just a few minutes ago about a dance party on the street. Apparently students are also… Continue

Overheard:
Girl sitting in front of Wheeler on her phone: "Well, that's why I am so prude, I don't want to end up on that list! I feel sorry for her though."
--OH what list? I want to know? A list of hookups?
Girl to her friend in Sproul Plaza: "So the cashier at Trader Joes says to me, 'You look about sixteen! You look way to young to buy wine'. And I was just to so sick of people saying that I look young that I said, 'How old are you sixty? You look way too old for this… Continue

Here is a video about being safe on campus. Is it bad that I find it humorous? The first girl looks high and the second girl is clearly upset and not in a mood to be bothered by scolding police. The girl is almost in tears. But I wonder if I could get one of those vans to take me home from parties when I am drunk. On Halloween it was raining and I could have used a free cab.
Oh yeah, in case you haven't been reminded enough by self righteous douche bags, remember to vote.
Do… Continue
Today in the rain soaked concrete you make have noticed a thin white strings following the campus walkways. The String had typed cards attached to it with mysterious notes. No you aren't going crazy from staring at a book too much. I saw them and I never study. So what is the mystery string. Is it an installation piece from some guerrilla art group on campus? HAHA, no way, this is Berkeley not Sarah Lawrence. We barely have art students. Although if you are careful on quiet days you might see on… Continue

Here are some weekend highlights from the UC Berkeley community.
-It rained balls on Saturday. If you ask me it was a perfect day for the streets to be rivers. It gave us all an excuse to recover from their Halloween hangover. I just told everyone I didn't leave the house all day because of the terrible weather, not because I was in bed watching trashy television on NBC.com and rehydrating.
- The Bears defeated the Ducks. It isn't that fair to have bears compete against ducks if you ask me. Be… Continue

Friday: Celebrate Halloween. I expect to see you out and about in your slutty/scary outfits. Some of you may be going to the Where the Wild Things Are party and the Wilde Co op. Lets see how long that one lasts before it gets shut down. I give it until eleven. I am sure there are multiple frat parties. I know what you won't be doing, heading over to the Castro. RIP Halloween… Continue

Alrene Blum, biophysical chemist by profession with a doctoral degree from U.C. - The last day to change your classes to pass/non pass is tomorrow. So if you didn't do so well on a mid-term because you were doing beer bongs at a frat party or reading blogs on the internet instead of studying, not all is lost. But you better get on it.
- Don't forget to get your Halloween costume. If you are like me, you have been running around like a headless chicken and haven't had a chance to get a costume together. Don't be a homeless person AGAIN. Animals make good cheap costumes. Dre… Continue
